Are you a leader and what characteristics makes up a good leader?
Today’s topic is on leadership, we will cover key points on:
What are some characteristics of a good leader?
How to be a leader and not a boss? Are they different?
Being an effective leader requires constant focus, perseverance, attention to detail, great communication and building a team that is accountable and designed to get results. Without a team there can be no real leadership. These five unique perspectives provide great insight while also validating certain commonalities. But first, what is leadership? We all have our own understanding of what it means to lead but is there a clear picture when it comes to the concept of leadership? One thing we can always agree on is the elements that make up a true leader.
So what are some of those elements?
Empathy is simply the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. We are all flawed human beings; we all have our bad days. This is where we separate a leader from a boss. A boss typically just wants the job done be it for financial gain or for simple praise. They will not take time to understand your stance or why things were done the way they are.
Leaders want to see you grow with them they want you to move up the ladder and not stay stagnant. A true leader surrounds his team with positivity and the ability to grow. More often than not they will invest their time and money to get reading, writing and self improvement material for their team. Self development is very important.
A leader wants the best for you therefore they are very honest and blunt with you. They get straight to the point and don’t waste your time. It often comes off as being rude and at times very abrasive but that’s because they genuinely care. They are not quick to react as they think through and don’t just come to you with a problem only, they also come with a solution (s). Where as a boss reacts very fast and lacks understanding. As I stated before a “boss” just wants to get it over and done with therefore if you are an inconvenience to them they will simply let you go without steering you in the right direction.
The greatest trait of all leaders is GREAT communication skills. They are the best communicators, they get to the point. Their directions are very clear and are open to new suggestions just as much as they are to criticism.
Last but not least: A sense of Humor.
LAUGH LAUGH LAUGH…..a great sense of humor goes a long ways!
In conclusion…..Aim to be a leader and not a boss. When you lead you not only see better results but you also produce a team that will go above and beyond to ensure goals are met and the results will speak volumes.
